Thinlabs University (N-Z)

Here's more techno-jargon you'll find in the midst of your emails and telephone conversations with Thinlabs representatives - a list of key terms and simple definitions in English that you can understand (N thru Z - updated periodically). If you want the more technical info, click on the links where available.
- Parallel Port - connection point on a system for attaching older (often called legacy) devices (such as printers)
- PoE (acronym for Power over Ethernet) - a standard which a computer receives both network access and power over a single network cable, for greatly reduced electrical requirements and setup flexibility
- PoE 802.3at+ - IEEE standard that supports Gigabit Ethernet data capacity on PoE Midspan connections; provides a minimum of 24W of power
- PoE Midspan Injector - injects power into a network cable without affecting data; great for introducing PoE to non-PoE network links; practical when only a few PoE devices are in use (Thinlabs offers medium power 30W as well as high power 75W injectors)
- PoE Splitter - for splitting network data to the network jack on a motherboard, and power to the power slot on a motherboard
- Quad Core - type of motherboard that has four central processing units (or CPUs) in its core
- RFID Tag - an identification tag that utilizes radio technology to allow for streamlined inventory control
- Screen - (also known as Liquid Crystal Display [LCD] or Light Emitting Diode [LED] Display) - what you’re viewing right now
- Serial Port - connection point on a system for attaching older devices (such as scanners, Uninterruptable Power Supplies and more)
- Software - computer instructions / programs or data (ie MS Office, MS Windows, Google Chrome, etc) installed on a system
- Thin Client - systems designed for use by users in a client-server architecture, where important data is centrally stored
- Touch Screen - an extra piece of glass placed on top of a screen allowing you to use a finger or stylus to run programs on a screen; Thinlabs utilize several different types of touch screens in their systems:
- IR (Infrared) Touch - quite durable; difficult to scratch; very sensitive to touch
- Optical Touch - uses a pair of small cameras atop the touch screen; used with larger screens
- Resistive Touch - multi-layered; highly resistant to liquids and contaminants; pressable with a finger or stylus; more susceptible to damage from sharp objects
- USB - a standard that allows devices to be attached and removed from a system while running (Thinlabs devices support up to USB 3.0; the newer the version, the faster data can transfer through it, and the lower the power consumption)
- Virtual Memory - space on a Flash that the system uses like Memory temporarily when all space in Memory is being used; slower than standard Memory, however
- Zero Client - system installed without memory or a flash; must connect directly to a company’s server for access
